Two nights later, I walk into the hotel carrying a little furball. The tiny Persian kitten is curled up in my arms sound asleep. His ginger-colored fur is sticking up in all directions, and I can’t wait for Jenna to see him. “Look what I found on the way home.” She runs and grabs the little kitten from my hands.

“Oh my God, he’s so cute.” She’s holding him up to her face and rubbing his face against hers. “Where did you find him? Is he lost?”

“I’m joking. I bought him for you.” After giving the kitten a scratch behind the ears, I kiss her lips. “What are you going to name the little guy?”

“Really? He’s ours?” My heart speeds up when she calls the kitten ‘ours’, and I nod yes.

“Since you’re Mr. Quinlan, I think the other man in my life should be Mr. Kitty.” I almost come in my pants when she turns to the cat and sweet talks to the animal. “What do you think, little man? Do you like the name, Mr. Kitty?” The feline looks unimpressed with his new name and promptly falls asleep in her arms.

After putting the kitten down to sleep in his new bed, Jenna sits next to me on the sofa and says, “Thank you for my surprise. I love him.”

“You’re very welcome. I love you very much.” I take her lips, and when I lean my forehead against hers, she blows me away when she whispers, “I love you, too. So much it scares me.”

I blink several times to control the tears that have sprung to my eyes. “There is nothing to be scared of. We are going to be so happy together.”

The kitten chooses that moment to screech when he falls out of his bed, and we laugh at his antics. Over the next several days, our life settles into a pattern of Jenna spending the days with Mr. Kitty and me trying to get all the bullshit at the office under control so we can go home soon.

I want to get Jenna moved into my home in Marshall City and settled. Hearing her declare her love for me has helped, but I won’t feel like everything is ultimately resolved until I have her wearing my ring with my baby in her belly. To keep her happy, I encourage Callie to take her to lunch and shopping several times a week. While they are gone, I spend time with my son, trying to ease some of the tension between us. I keep hoping that he’ll come to terms with my relationship with Jenna soon.

When he walks into my office with a scowl on his face and a rigid stance, I sigh, knowing another confrontation is coming. Why the fuck does he feel the need to push my buttons? I take a deep breath and pray for patience.

“Okay let me have it…”
